Contemporary interior style

Contemporary design is simply the design of the moment — and in this decade that means soft curves, warm greige palettes, boucle and brushed brass, rooms that feel current but liveable. Unlike modern style, which follows a historical vocabulary, contemporary moves with what is being made now.

Materials and texture

Today's contemporary palette leans tactile: boucle and chenille upholstery, matte stone, fluted wood, brushed metal. Straight lines are softened into rounded arms, oval tables and arched details — geometry with the corners taken off.

Color and light

Warm neutrals dominate: greige, sand, mushroom and off-white, grounded by one deeper tone such as charcoal or terracotta. Lighting is layered and sculptural — a statement pendant, concealed coves, a floor lamp treated as sculpture.

Furniture and layout

Fewer, larger pieces in soft-edged silhouettes; storage is integrated and invisible. Layouts favor open flow with one clear focal zone — usually the seating group — and negative space is treated as part of the composition.

How to get the look

• Anchor the room with one large curved sofa in a warm neutral
• Mix no more than three materials — fabric, stone, brushed metal
• Swap sharp-edged tables for rounded silhouettes
• Keep decor to a few sculptural objects with breathing room
• Refresh accents seasonally; contemporary is allowed to evolve

Contemporary vs minimalist

Both keep rooms calm, but minimalism is defined by subtraction while contemporary design is defined by currency — it can hold plenty of furniture as long as the shapes and finishes feel current. A minimalist room never dates; a contemporary room is expected to.
