Modern style is often confused with contemporary, but in interiors "modern" usually points to the modernist tradition: clean straight lines, honest materials, open plans and a strict no-fuss attitude. A modern living room reads calm and ordered — everything has a purpose, and decoration comes from proportion rather than ornament.

Materials and texture

Modern rooms keep a tight material kit: smooth plaster or painted walls, one or two wood tones, metal accents and flat-weave textiles. Leather, steel and glass appear without apology; what you will not find is carving, frills or distressing.

Color and light

The palette is neutral at the base — white, grey, black — with one accent allowed to speak. Daylight is the main event: large windows, light sheers or none, and lamps placed exactly where function demands. Contrast is graphic rather than colorful.

Furniture and layout

Pieces are rectangular, low-slung and precisely scaled: a boxy sofa, a slab table, modular shelving on a grid. Layouts respect circulation first — walkways stay clear, seating faces the room's true focal point, and nothing blocks a window.

Modern vs contemporary

The words are used interchangeably, but designers separate them: modern points to the modernist tradition with its straight lines and natural materials, while contemporary is a moving target — today's contemporary rooms favor soft curves and warm greiges. A modern room stays crisp; a contemporary room follows the season.
